When Someone Says “I Can’t Go On” — Don’t Ignore It

Sometimes emotional pain becomes so overwhelming that a person may feel hopeless, trapped, or like a burden to others. Talking about death or suicide, withdrawing from people, saying goodbye, giving away important belongings, sudden extreme mood changes, or looking for ways to die can be warning signs that someone needs help.

Taking such signs seriously does not mean judging or frightening the person. It means listening calmly, staying connected, and helping them reach appropriate professional support.

If someone may be in immediate danger of harming themselves, do not leave them alone. Seek urgent professional or emergency help and involve a trusted person who can help keep them safe.

Asking someone directly whether they are thinking about suicide does not increase suicidal thoughts or behaviour. It can open an important conversation and help the person feel heard.

Asking can be the beginning of help. Listening can be the beginning of hope.

At Carl Rogers Mental Health Counselling & Guidance Centre, we provide a respectful, non-judgmental space for people experiencing emotional distress and help guide them toward appropriate support when needed.

Based on guidance from WHO and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

If there is immediate danger, seek emergency/crisis support without delay.
